Plumbers give estimates before larger jobs such as water heater replacements, repipes, sewer line repairs, remodel rough-ins, and fixture upgrades. Customers often compare two or three quotes, so they look at the total, the brand and quality of the fixtures, what is included, and the warranty. Small repairs are usually quoted verbally or by flat-rate price at the door.
When to use estimates: Use estimates to provide project quotes and get client approval before starting work. Once approved, convert your estimate to an invoice with one click to collect payment.

A 40-gallon builder-grade heater and a 50-gallon high-efficiency model are very different prices. Naming them prevents disputes about what was promised.
Customers often buy their own faucets or toilets. State whether you warrant customer-supplied parts and what happens if they arrive wrong or defective.
Permit fees and required upgrades like expansion tanks, seismic straps, or pressure-reducing valves can add cost. Say whether they are in the price.
Cutting into walls or digging for a sewer line leaves damage. State whether patching, concrete, landscaping, or tile repair is included.
Corroded pipe, failing shutoffs, or non-code work found after opening walls is common. A stated hourly rate for unforeseen work avoids arguments.
Customers need to know when the water will be off and how long the job takes, especially in occupied homes and businesses.
Material prices change, so a 15 to 30 day expiration is reasonable. List the deposit and progress payments so there are no surprises.
| Service | Priced | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Service call / trip charge (diagnosis) | per visit | $75-200 |
| Standard labor rate | per hour | $85-200 |
| Emergency or after-hours labor | per hour | $150-300 |
| Drain clearing (sink, tub, or toilet) | flat fee | $150-400 |
| Toilet replacement (customer or plumber supplied) | flat fee | $250-600 |
| Tank water heater replacement (40-50 gal, installed) | flat fee | $1,200-2,800 |
| Garbage disposal install | flat fee | $200-500 |
| Main sewer line camera inspection | flat fee | $150-500 |
Typical US ranges. Rates vary by region, experience, and job size.
For water heaters and fixtures, present two or three options at different price points with different warranties. Customers feel in control and you are less likely to be undercut on a single price.
Phone quotes for anything beyond simple swaps lead to underbidding. Look at access, pipe material, shutoff condition, venting, and distance to the main before committing to a number.
Older homes hide problems. Build in time for seized valves and difficult access, or clearly exclude them and state your hourly rate for extras.
Camera inspections, repipe surveys, and detailed remodel plans take real time. Many plumbers charge a fee and credit it toward the job if the customer accepts.
Many plumbers do for installations and replacements, but charge a diagnostic fee for troubleshooting a problem. Charging for time-intensive work like sewer camera inspections is common and reasonable.
Fifteen to thirty days is typical. Shorter windows make sense when copper, PVC, or equipment prices are moving quickly.
Not for the agreed scope. You can add charges for conditions you could not see or for work the customer requests, but get written approval first and show the change as a separate line.
It depends on the wording. A fixed-price quote commits you to the amount for the stated scope, while an estimate may allow variation. Label the document clearly and state what could change the price.
