Roofers send a written estimate after an inspection, usually on the roof itself or with drone or ladder measurements. Homeowners often collect two or three bids and compare price, shingle brand, warranty, and what is included for decking and cleanup. Insurance work adds a second estimate, the adjuster's, which the roofer's scope is often measured against.
When to use estimates: Use estimates to provide project quotes and get client approval before starting work. Once approved, convert your estimate to an invoice with one click to collect payment.

These drive material and labor cost. Stating them prevents arguments if the actual area or layer count differs.
Clients compare bids on materials. Naming them avoids substitutions of lower grade products.
Rot is unknown until tear-off. A stated price per sheet sets the rule for extras before they happen.
Flashing is a common leak source and an easy place for scope disagreements.
Cleanup is part of the expected result. Listing it shows what the price covers.
Clarifies who pulls the permit and whether the cost is in the price.
Material prices change and weather moves schedules, so say how long the price holds and what happens in rain.

Typical US ranges. Rates vary by region, experience, and job size.
Add 10 to 15 percent waste for shingles, more for complex roofs with hips, valleys, and dormers. Price tear-off, underlayment, shingles, and labor, then add overhead and profit rather than guessing a number per square.
Presenting 3-tab, architectural, and premium shingles, or an upgraded underlayment, lets the client choose a price point and often raises the average job size.
Shingle and metal prices can change quickly. A 15 to 30 day expiration protects your margin if the client waits.
Pictures of damage, worn flashing, and soft spots help the client understand why the work is needed and why your price may be higher than a bid that ignored them.
Most roofers give free estimates for full replacements. Charging a flat inspection fee for leak diagnosis, report writing, or insurance documentation is common, and some roofers credit it toward the job.
Give a per-sheet price and an allowance, for example up to 4 sheets included, with extra sheets billed at your stated rate. This keeps the base price competitive and sets the rule for hidden damage.
Usually not until the client signs a contract or accepts it in writing, and the terms depend on your state. State the expiration date and note that the price assumes the conditions seen at inspection.
