Door installers usually quote before ordering product or booking a crew, often after a site visit to measure the opening and check the frame, wall, and sill. Clients usually compare your price against other installers and big-box store installation programs, so a clear written scope helps you stand apart.
When to use estimates: Use estimates to provide project quotes and get client approval before starting work. Once approved, convert your estimate to an invoice with one click to collect payment.

Handedness and size errors are the most common and costly mistakes. Writing them down lets the client confirm before you order.
Makes clear what your price includes and who deals with defective or damaged product.
List removal of the old door, shimming, flashing, sealing, weatherstripping, hardware install, and cleanup so the client knows what they are getting.
Painting, staining, caulking, trim, and drywall patching are often assumed to be included. State if they are or are not.
Rot, termite damage, out-of-square framing, or a wrong-size opening may only show once the old door is out. Set an hourly rate or approval process for extras.
Special-order doors can take weeks. Giving an estimated delivery and install window prevents complaints about delays that are the supplier's.
Door and material prices change. A 30-day validity and a clear deposit amount protect you from cost increases.

Typical US ranges. Rates vary by region, experience, and job size.
Exterior and patio doors vary too much to price from photos alone. Check the sill, framing, and wall type, since stucco, brick, and rotted sills change the labor significantly.
Present a basic steel door, a mid-range fiberglass door, and a premium wood or glass option with install prices for each. Clients often choose the middle one and feel in control.
Houses built before the 1980s often have out-of-square openings and non-standard sizes. Add buffer time or a stated allowance for framing adjustments.
Showing door cost and installation cost on separate lines makes your labor price easier to defend and allows clients to buy the door themselves if they want to.
Many door installers give free estimates for standard jobs. For complex projects or long drives, charge a trip or measuring fee, often $50-150, and credit it toward the job if the client hires you.
Thirty days is typical. If the door is special order or material prices are moving, use a shorter period of 14 days and say so on the quote.
Only when the client approves a change in writing, ideally before you do the work. Your quote should explain which conditions can raise the price, such as rot or framing repair, and how those will be billed.
For a standard interior prehung swap, you can give a price range from photos and measurements. For anything exterior, confirm on site first, or state that the price is an estimate subject to inspection.
