Fence installers quote before any work starts, usually after a site visit to measure the run, check the grade, and note obstacles. Clients often collect two or three bids and compare price per foot, materials, gate hardware, and warranty. A clear written estimate helps you win the job and sets the scope for the final invoice.
When to use estimates: Use estimates to provide project quotes and get client approval before starting work. Once approved, convert your estimate to an invoice with one click to collect payment.

Cedar versus pressure-treated pine, or 5 ft versus 6 ft vinyl, changes the price a lot. Naming the grade prevents arguments over what was promised.
A simple drawing with measurements and gate locations makes sure both sides agree on where the fence goes.
Gates are easy to misunderstand. Spell out width, latch type, and whether the gate is self-closing or lockable.
State whether the client has a survey or will mark the line. Make clear you install where the client indicates.
Tear-out is often assumed to be included. List it as in or out to avoid surprise charges.
These are the most common sources of extra cost. State how they will be priced if found.
Weather and lumber lead times affect schedules. An expiration date protects you from material price changes.

Typical US ranges. Rates vary by region, experience, and job size.
Account for corners, gate openings, slopes, and tie-ins to existing structures. Slopes require stepping or racking, which adds labor and material.
Show a pine option, a cedar option, and a vinyl or aluminum option. Clients often choose the middle one, and you can make a margin on each.
If digging conditions are uncertain, add a small allowance or a per-post rock charge so you are not absorbing problems.
Separate lines for fence, gates, removal, and permits give clarity without overwhelming the client with a parts list.
Most residential fence installers estimate for free. For complex commercial jobs or when drawings are needed, some charge a fee that is credited if the client signs.
Fifteen to thirty days is common. Lumber and steel prices change, so a short expiration protects your margin.
It depends on how it is written. A quote marked as a fixed price is generally binding if accepted, while an estimate may allow adjustments. State clearly which one you are giving and how changes are handled.
Include a line saying the final price is based on actual installed linear footage at the quoted rate. Then the invoice can be adjusted up or down without a dispute.
